violence

One cannot look around anymore, cannot read a paper, listen to the radio, watch TV or open a browser without being confronted by stories and images of extreme violence. Violence that is practiced by all groups, men and women, educated and uneducated people, Christians and Muslims

Take your pick – from the physical, emotional, psychological, spiritual, cultural, sexual, verbal and even financial abuse. Governments and institutions practice violence; also in the domestic realm, people use violence against their partners, children, wives and even pets.

Pick a location from Norway to Sinai to US high schools; from road rage, urban terrorism to religious wars. Pick the time and the age from Alexander the Great, Middle Ages, WWI, WWII and today’s wars. And what about modern day war protocols, machines and instruments for total destruction in and out of war zones!

“Is violence per se a part of the universe of things that simply happen?” And how to justify or explain violence. Should we consider the use of violence to solve our problems normal! Should we think of violence as an option in social behavior! Should we accept the state monopoly on violence and hope it disappears from other segments of society! So many questions no body wants to answer.

Napoleon said “The world suffers a lot. Not because of the violence of bad people, but because of the silence of good people!”

Did he really want to say “Shame on the human race!”
